Bible 7 & Bible 8: Journal Post #27

Listen, watch, and react to the following video.

Lyrics:

Oh, I’ve heard a thousand stories
Of what they think You’re like.
But I’ve heard the tender whisper
Of love in the dead of night.
And You tell me that You’re pleased
And that I’m never alone.

oh and I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching for answers only you can provide
’cause you know just what we need before we say a word

You’re a good good father
It’s who you are, It’s who you are
Its who you are
And I’m love by you
It’s who I am, It’s who I am
It’s who I am x 2

Because you are perfect in all of you ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your way to us x 2

Oh it’s love so undeniable
I, I can hardly think as you call me
Deeper still, as you call me
Deeper still, as you call me
Deeper still, into love love love

You’re a good good father
It’s who you are, It’s who you are
Its who you are
And I’m love by you
It’s who I am, It’s who I am
It’s who I am

Because you are perfect in all of you ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your way to us

Art is one of the most beautiful mediums with which people interact on a consistent basis.  One of the more famous art pieces is the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo.  Watch this video and react to the content in this video and the information within.  How does this piece of art impact you in your faith?

Bible 7 & Bible 8: Journal Post #25

Christian music has adapted in many ways over the last few years.  And, David Crowder has been in the forefront of the contemporary/worship music movement.  On his last album, this song stuck out to me as a brilliantly written piece on the acceptance and grace of God.

For this prompt, listen and react to this song.  Below are the lyrics to the song:

Come out of sadness
From wherever you’ve been
Come broken hearted
Let rescue begin
Come find your mercy
Oh sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are

There’s hope for the hopeless
And all those who’ve strayed
Come sit at the table
Come taste the grace
There’s rest for the weary
Rest that endures
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t cure

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
Come as you are
Fall in his arms
Come as you are
There’s joy for the morning
Oh sinner be still
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
Come as you are
Come as you are

Bible 8 & Bible 7: 24th Journal Post

This one is deeper and faster than the previous videos.  It will be deeper because you will have to search for the connection to faith within this video.  This video is not directly about faith and Jesus, but I think there are hints and themes that carry over to faith.

The video is by RSA, and they are animating a talk given by Sir Ken Robinson at a TED Talk.  The video is about education, but there is a lot of information you can get from the topic.  The video goes fast, so feel free to pause if you need to.

However, I want you to watch and react to the video.  Specifically, I want you to react to how you think this video relates to your faith today or to our culture of faith today.

Bible 8 & Bible 7: 23rd Journal Post

A common practice in many churches is to read through a pre-written book called the Lectionary as a church every Sunday.  The Lectionary often has 4 readings (an Old Testament, a Psalm, a New Testament, and a Gospel reading).  When a church uses the Lectionary, they will read through the majority of the Bible in 3 years time.  Your prompt for this post is to read and react to the Lectionary readings for Sunday, January 18, 2015.

There is a large amount of text here, so take your time and slowly try to hear what God may have to say to you today.

(For future reference, there is an iPhone and Android app with the Daily Office and Lectionary.  It has the option for daily readings and the weekly church readings.)

1 Samuel 3:1-10, (11-20)

3:1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 3:2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3:3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was.
3:4 Then the LORD called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” 3:5 and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.
3:6 The LORD called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.”
3:7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.
3:8 The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy.  3:9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
3:10 Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 3:11 Then the LORD said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle.  3:12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.  3:13 For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them.  3:14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever.”
3:15 Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli.  3:16 But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” He said, “Here I am.”
3:17 Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.”  3:18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, “It is the LORD; let him do what seems good to him.”
3:19 As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.
3:20 And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the LORD.

Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18

139:1 O LORD, you have searched me and known me.
139:2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.
139:3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
139:4 Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely.
139:5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.

139:13 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
139:14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
139:15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
139:16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.
139:17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
139:18 I try to count them — they are more than the sand; I come to the end — I am still with you.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

6:12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.
6:13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.  6:14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power.  6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!  6:16 Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.”
6:17 But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
6:18 Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself.  6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?  6:20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

John 1:43-51

1:43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”  1:44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
1:45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
1:46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
1:47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”
1:48 Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
1:49 Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
1:50 Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.”
1:51 And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Watch this video and react to the words, the harmonies, and the meaning.  This is Noah Gunderson and his family.  They are a “I knew about them before they got big” band.  The family is often in Nashville.  Also, this song combines three songs that I enjoy.

Lyrics

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.
Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.

My father is a hard earned worker; my mother has a heart of gold.
I was never much younger but I feel twice as old.

Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.
Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.

But I’ve got money for food and a little bit of gasoline.
I’ve got plenty of time but I want everything now.
I don’t need no gold or silver,
Oh I only need a few new things.
Oh I would buy pearls for my lover,
Oh and a brand new set of guitar strings.

Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.
Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.

I feel a cold wind blowing;
Dark clouds form on the western sky.
I’ve got a feeling like knowing that everyone here will someday die.

Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.
Stone cold broke in the middle of the winter, oh like a poor man’s son.

But I see the bright stars shining high above Bethlehem town;
And I hear the chorus of angels singing out loud the sweetest sound.

Oh brothers, let’s go down.
Let’s go down, come on down.
Oh brothers, let’s go down,
Down in the river to pray.

Oh sisters, let’s go down.
Let’s go down, come on down.
Oh sisters, let’s go down,
Down in the river to pray.

Oh family, let’s go down.
Let’s go down, come on down.
Oh family, let’s go down,
Down in the river to pray.

I don’t need no gold or silver.
Oh I only need a few new things.
Oh I would buy pearls for my lover,
Or just a brand new set of guitar strings.

2015 Goals

It is important to evaluate the previous years and to set goals for the future.  If we don’t know where we are going, we will not likely get to a good place.  So, for the first entry of the second semester, it will be helpful to process our individual goals.  So, I will ask some topical questions to guide you to think about your personal direction for 2015.

What kind of person do you want to be known as?

By December, what do you want to do with your education?

By December, what spiritual experiences do you want to participate in?

By December, what kinds of relationship experiences do you want to have?

By December, what “resolutions” do you want to participate in?

Be specific with your answers.  Think about timing and frequency.  Also, don’t set up so many goals that you cannot participate in any of them.

Bible 7 & Bible 8: 19th Journal Entry

Most of you know that I do not avoid the controversial topics at this point.  So, this post will be a response to a blog post about the recent events in Ferguson and NYC.  It also has to do with Advent.  If you are unfamiliar, Advent is the Christian season where we focus on the waiting time between now and the birth of Christ.  Churches all over the world will be focusing on Jesus’ birth narrative for the next month.

Watch this link for how the two topics relate.

Prompt

What is your reaction to the blog post?  What is your reaction to the current events which have occurred in Ferguson and NYC?  What is your response when you think about the season of Advent?
